OCTOBER 21, 2008
Pat Danielson A beautiful fall day in Yakima brought the Kiwanis Club of Yakima together for their weekly meeting under new PRESIDENT RON ZIRKLE (nattily attired, I might add!) . STEVE SOELBERG warmly greeted us. JULIUS GLOVER led us in song. RUSS ROBERTS prayed for us and also hoped others would volunteer for invocator so he won’t have to do it every week! But Russ, we like your prayers!
We had no guests except for our program.
LEGION OF HONOR RECIPIENTS: MAC PORTER was recognized with a Legion of Honor for his 35 years of Kiwanis membership. Thank you, Mac. BOB BROWN was another Legion of Honor recipient for his 40 years of Kiwanis service. Thank you, Bob. Those not there that also will receive Legion of Honor awards are GENE SHIELDS (60 years), PAT GILMORE, RICK LARSON AND GARY STAPLES.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: CHRIS CHRISTMAN then reminded everyone that Division 50 and especially our club needs a report in the District magazine that had come out on Tuesday. Any volunteers?
INTERCLUBS: BETH KLINGELE, our interclub chairperson, announced that our club had already completed 4 interclubs for the month and she scheduled one more for Kamiakin for this week. Good job on those interclubs!
A get well card was passed around for CLARENCE BARNETT, a long time member of our club that is currently recovering in a nursing home. Clarence is a Senior member with limited attendance but does receive his Bulletin every two weeks.
50 -50 DRAWING: Another week with NO winner and the pot grows to $1015! MAC PORTER was the lucky/unlucky guy who had his number called but no Jack for him! Come next week for another chance!
SGT CHRISTINE COTE then quizzed us all on the Best of Yakima as reported in the Business Times. We are obviously not good readers of the BT since our answers were not too accurate but Christine did bring in the dollars for the Administrative Budget!
THANK YOU from the Bulletin Committee: PAT DANIELSON thanked DR. MIKE WILSON and CHRISTINE COTE and Perry Tech for the ads for the Bulletin Web Page. If anyone else wants to purchase an ad, let Pat know.
CAMERATA CLUB: Julius then reminded us of the great performance coming up on November 8 at the Capital Theatre. Tickets are $8.
PROGRAM: TRESSA SCHOCKLEY then introduced our program for the day. Donald Phillips and Anna Martinez from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) presented us all with information about the program for children that gives those that are abused and or neglected a voice in court and watches over them. The CASA volunteer and the service help those also in Yakima Valley Juvenile Court System and in the Foster Care System. CASA is very much in need for volunteers to serve as non-biased third party protectors of those children. The State system is over burdened. In Yakima County there are 700 kids in the dependency system and only 200 are covered by the voluntary advocates. The program started in 1977 in King County and is now nationwide. The volunteers are from the community and are given 35 hours of in depth training. They need those volunteers to talk to teachers, doctors etc. The volunteer just needs good communication skills, common sense and a good decision making process.
Donations can also be made in time, supplies, ideas and money. Buddy Bags are made for the children and include necessary things for those children who don’t have it. You could have 1 child or up to 20 assigned to you depending on your time schedule.
Next weeks program is Classification Talks by our new members and put it on your calendar that November 11 is at the YWCA.
